La L-théanine est un acide aminé naturellement présent dans le thé. Il a été démontré qu'elle exerce un effet calmant sur le cerveau, en déclenchant la production d'ondes cérébrales alpha associées à un état de veille et de relaxation, et en diminuant les ondes cérébrales bêta associées aux sentiments d'agitation et de nervosité. La L-théanine influence les niveaux des neurotransmetteurs dopamine, sérotonine, norépinéphrine et glutamate, et est également métabolisée en acide gamma-aminobutyrique (GABA), un neurotransmetteur qui joue un rôle clé dans la relaxation et la mémoire.
La L-théanine peut aider à promouvoir temporairement la relaxation et à améliorer les sentiments de stress. Dans une étude, un groupe de 50 femmes âgées de 18 à 22 ans a été divisé en deux groupes : un groupe très anxieux et un groupe peu anxieux. Elles ont reçu soit de l'eau (comme contrôle), soit une solution contenant 50 mg ou 200 mg de L-théanine, et leurs ondes cérébrales ont été mesurées pendant 60 minutes. Comparé aux témoins, le groupe recevant 200 mg de L-théanine présentait une augmentation significative des ondes cérébrales alpha, indiquant un effet de relaxation. Des résultats similaires ont été observés dans un autre essai clinique où 35 jeunes volontaires en bonne santé ont reçu 50 mg de L-théanine et ont présenté une activité élevée des ondes cérébrales alpha pendant les 105 minutes qui ont suivi.
